Baby Driver – Film Review

This is an electrifying fresh film for Edgar Wright, with a great up and coming leading actor, Ansel Elgort. He has such charm and charisma as an actor that he is likable on screen. He is able to have the audience’s attention without being being forced into a leading man persona like some young actors have failed to capture. The overall cast is great with Jon Hamm, Kevin Spacey, Lily James, Eiza González, Kevin Spacey and Jamie Foxx with Jon Bernthal. I felt that Jon Bernthal was vastly underused.

The music in this film felt very well woven into the film especially the first coffee run scene. The action sequences work really well with the music. There was some great cinematography as well that elevated the film, especially with the use of color and shots. There was such a sense of heart and well developed character moments that made you care about Baby throughout the film as a compassionate character. I also found that there was some great surprises with some characters that I didn’t expect them to make.

Fuck you, Buddy.

The only negatives I had with the film involved the pacing. I felt that it didn’t have as much energy as “Scott Pilgrim vs The World” or “At World’s End”, some of Wright’s previous films. But the pacing didn’t make it a bad film just a different more pleasant adventure. The story also went on longer than I thought it needed to. I felt that it had more of an unnecessary epilogue. If it had a tighter ending it would have been a stronger film.

I highly recommend people see this original film. Sure there are some comparisons to the 2011 film “Drive” but it’ vastly different from that in sense of characterization of the main protagonist and the level of intensity. Though it is not the best Edgar Wright film it is definitely something that should be supported in theaters, there are so many blockbusters based on pre-existing material that it is nice to see something that you’ve never heard of before. It is definitely worth your time and money.
